"When should I have my garage door serviced?"
This is an excellent question. Think about how many times you have your car serviced - whether it is an oil change, replacing or rotating the tires, a front end alignment, or an inspection.
Your garage door is getting as much use as your car, but one tends to act surprised when it breaks! The most common parts that break are the springing system, the lifting cables, and the rollers, which are under extreme tension and produce friction every time the garage door operates, regardless of whether or not there is a garage door opener connected to the door.
It is best to visually check the rollers, cables, and springs for signs of wear and tear every six months. A good time to perform this visual check is when you turn back the clocks and change the batteries in the smoke detector. Once you notice a frayed cable or a worn roller, for example, have a qualified professional replace them BEFORE they break. Do not attempt to replace the parts by yourself, as the door is under extreme tension.
This can save you time, money, and more importantly stress. It is inevitable that some of the garage door components will break; it is just a matter of time. Prevent a headache! Have your door serviced before you get stuck inside your garage when you really need to be at an important meeting, a doctor's appointment, or your kids' sporting event.
